ACT ONE
[00:00, INT. CASTLE LOFT, BEDROOM - MORNING]
[Castle bolts up in bed. He looks around the room with a disappointed look to find himself alone. Beckett enters wearing only her shirt, carrying two cups of coffee and Castle smiles.]

BECKETT
Made you coffee.

CASTLE
So it wasn’t a dream.

[Beckett hands Castle the coffee cup.]

BECKETT
No. You definitely… (giggles) weren’t dreaming.

[Beckett sits on the bed.]

CASTLE
Uh, you were right. I had no idea.

BECKETT
So you liked it?

CASTLE
Yeah.

BECKETT
Even the part where…

CASTLE
Especially that part. I loved that.

BECKETT
Good. Me too.

CASTLE
So…You’re on—one board with this, right? It’s not some “Oh, I—I quit my job, I almost died, I’m in crisis” thing?

BECKETT
Uh, no. Not for me.

CASTLE
Okay. Me neither.

[Castle smiles.]

BECKETT
Okay. Good.

CASTLE
Good.

BECKETT
But I, um… I did just quit my job. And I do have the day off.

[Beckett gives Castle a suggestive smile.]

CASTLE
I—I do…too.

[Beckett starts to unbutton her shirt.]

BECKETT
Oh, really?

CASTLE
Yes.

BECKETT
Huh.

CASTLE
So what would you, um…

[Castle pulls the sleeve off Beckett’s shoulder.]

CASTLE
…like to do today?

BECKETT
Um, I don’t know. We could read.

CASTLE
We could watch TV.

BECKETT
Yeah, we could get something to eat.

CASTLE
We could do that, yeah.

[Beckett leans forward to kiss Castle. The front door closes.]

MARTHA (O.S.)
Richard! I’m home!

CASTLE
Oh my god!

[Beckett yelps as Castle rolls them onto the floor. They pop up to a standing position, Castle clutching a sheet and Beckett covering herself with a pillow.]

CASTLE (whisper)
Oh, god.

BECKETT (whisper)
You said she was at the Hamptons.

CASTLE (whisper)
She was in the Hamptons. She’s not supposed to be here.

MARTHA (O.S.)
Darling, we need to talk.

CASTLE (whisper)
Hide.

BECKETT
What?

CASTLE
Hide.

BECKETT
Are you serious?

CASTLE
Get in the closet.

[Castle pushes her towards the door.]

BECKETT (whisper)
No, I’m not going in the closet!

CASTLE (whisper)
Get in the closet!

[Castle shoves Beckett in the closet.]

BECKETT
Ugh!

[Martha enters.]

MARTHA
What’s going on?

CASTLE
I’m just…m--making the bed.

MARTHA
Oh.

CASTLE
What are you doing here?

MARTHA
Well, I wanted to talk to you about—

[Castle notices Beckett’s bra on the floor.]

MARTHA (CONT’D)
--your daughter’s many fine qualities.

CASTLE
Do we have to do this now?

MARTHA
And to remind you that our Alexis is a paragon of--

[Castle uses his toes to shove Beckett’s bra out of sight while Beckett purses her lips in the closet.]

MARTHA
--of grace and good sense and maturity, although where she got those qualities, I do not know.

CASTLE (fake exaggerated laugh)
Right. I would just be so much more comfortable having this conversation with my clothes on.

[Martha is surprised, seeing his bed sheet for the first time.]

MARTHA
Oh. Well, yes. (chuckle) We’ll meet you in the kitchen.

[Martha exits.]

CASTLE
“We”? Alexis is here, too?

[A pillow flies past Castle’s head. Beckett puffs angrily in the closet.]

--
[03:33, INT. CASTLE LOFT, KITCHEN - MORNING]
[Castle enters fully dressed.]

MARTHA
How about some tea? Tea can be very soothing. Hmm?

ALEXIS
Oh, no. Not tea.

MARTHA
No tea.

ALEXIS
No tea.

CASTLE
Alexis, are you hungover?

[Castle sees Beckett’s shadow moving in his bedroom.]

MARTHA
Well, the graduation festivities got a tad out of hand and Alexis called me from the party, I drove into town, I picked her up. So, please don’t get angry, darling.

CASTLE
Well, why didn’t you call me?

ALEXIS
I tried, you didn’t pick up.

CASTLE
Oh. Right. Then…that’s…on me. That’s my bad.

[Beckett sneaks to the door with her stuff. Castle tries to cover her exit. Beckett reaches the door and discovers she doesn’t have her bra.]

CASTLE
Well, Alexis, as your father, I have to say that I am…

[Beckett sneaks back to the bedroom for her bra.]

CASTLE
Deeply disappointed in you, and yet oddly proud.

ALEXIS (moans)
My head is pounding.

MARTHA
Oh, honey, I’ll get you a couple of Aspirin.

[Martha starts turning towards the door just as Beckett is heading back to it, so he grabs her arm.]

CASTLE
No!

MARTHA
Ah! Ooh.

[Beckett freezes.]

CASTLE
No Aspirin.

MARTHA
What do you mean? Why not?

CASTLE
It’s her first hangover. I mean, this is a milestone. It’s a rite of passage.

[Beckett continues to the door and Castle raises his voice.]

CASTLE
Don’t you want to experience this in its...in its fullness, un… untrammeled by the…the relief of over the counter pain relievers!

[Beckett’s exit is covered by Castle’s shouting.]

ALEXIS
No.

CASTLE
No. Okay. Aspirin it is, sweetheart. I’m sorry.

[Alexis sighs and sinks back to propping her head on her arms.]

--
[04:38, INT. PRECINCT, BULLPEN - MORNING]

GATES
So, any progress on Beckett’s shooter?

RYAN
We searched the rental car. We still have no idea where he was going or even what his real name was. But we did find out what he stole from Captain Montgomery’s house.

[Ryan shows her a wedding album.]

GATES (surprised)
Montgomery’s wedding album. Why did Maddox want this?

RYAN
I’m guessing he wanted this missing photograph. It’s possible he was after whoever was in it.

GATES
Have you been able to track it down?

RYAN
Well, I’ve got Evelyn Montgomery bringing the negatives in, but truth is, I’m a one-man band here. I could use a few more investigators.

GATES
Well, you can take it up with the vice president.

[Gates points to the TV news. The caption reads “Senator Bracken Introduces VP Russell”. Sub-caption reads “Sold Out Event Is Standing Room Only”.]

GATES (CONT’D)
I’ve already lost half my people to his security detail and I’m about to lose the rest to traffic control. So, for right now, you’re on your own.

[Gates leaves and Ryan stares at Maddox’s photo on the murder board, then down at the missing photo in the wedding album.]

--
[05:22, INT. MICHAEL SMITH’S APARTMENT - DAY]

MADDOX
You’re putting yourself through this for nothing, Mr. Smith. We both know how it will end. Don’t make me take this to the next level. Tell me where the file is.

MICHAEL SMITH
Go to hell.

[Maddox stares at Smith, then breaks one of his fingers.]

--
[05:48, INT. BECKETT’S APARTMENT - DAY]
[Someone knocks frantically on a door. Beckett opens it to find Castle standing there with a sheepish, apologetic cringe.]

BECKETT
So, are you here to apologize for hiding me in your closet?

[They enter.]

CASTLE
Look, let me explain. When I heard her voice, I reacted by instinct.

BECKETT
Yeah. Like the instinct of a sophomore in high school.

CASTLE
Right.

[Beckett turns around and gives him a look.]

CASTLE
No. Look, I—

BECKETT
Wait a minute. You’re embarrassed about being seen with me.

CASTLE
Now that is not true. Look, I…This…I… Okay… This is all just still very new to me. And, call me selfish, but I want to keep what we have together to ourselves a bit longer.

BECKETT
Still, it wasn’t your finest hour.

CASTLE
No. But maybe I could…

[Castle saunters forward slowly.]

CASTLE
…make it up to you…somehow.

[Beckett starts to smirk.]

BECKETT
I suppose since we know that you’re mom’s not gonna be barging in, we could go for a round two.

CASTLE
Well, technically it would be a round four, but—

[Someone knocks at the door. Castle turns toward the door.]

CASTLE
She’s stalking us. She knows.

BECKETT
Who is it?

RYAN (O.S.)
Beckett, it’s Ryan!

CASTLE
Oh.

BECKETT
Hide. Quick, in the closet over there.

CASTLE
Yeah, I’m not getting in there.

BECKETT
Why? I hid in your closet, why can’t you hide in mine?

CASTLE
Why should I?

BECKETT
Becau…

RYAN (O.S.)
Beckett, is everything okay?

BECKETT
Fine!

[Beckett turns back to Castle.]

BECKETT
Okay, maybe I’m not ready for anyone to know yet. Right now.

CASTLE
Come on, how’s he gonna know?

BECKETT
You’re here. Just like I was there.

CASTLE
Yes. Yes, the difference being, I have my pants on. Or…or are you embarrassed to be seen with me?

BECKETT
Okay. Fine. Just act normal. If that’s even possible for you.

[Beckett heads for the door.]

CASTLE
It’s me.

[Beckett prepares to open the door and looks back at Castle to make sure he’s ready. Castle awkwardly tries to strike a casual pose. Beckett opens the door and Ryan enters.]

RYAN
Hey, Castle. What are you doing here?

CASTLE
Oh, I was just walking by…the neighbor…hood. I only live twenty…

[Castle thinks for a moment.]

CASTLE
I h…what are you doing here?

RYAN
I need to talk to you about the case.

BECKETT
Uh, Ryan…uh, no. Ryan, I’ve resigned. I’m done.

RYAN
Look, I hope this isn’t because of Gates. Or…because of what I did.

BECKETT
No. No, look, I get it. You were just trying to keep us safe.

RYAN
I still am. And this guy that threw you off the roof, he’s still out there.

CASTLE
Hey… (hesitant chuckle/sigh) Ryan…

RYAN
I know what this case has done to you. I’m not asking you to jump back in. I just want to show you something, that’s all.

[Ryan opens a file and pulls out a photo.]

RYAN
We found a copy of the photo Maddox took from the wedding album. You’re familiar with the guys that Roy ran with back in the day. Is he one of them?

BECKETT
I’ve never seen him before.

CASTLE
I have.

[Castle takes the photo.]

CASTLE
This is the man I told you about, the one who’s been keeping you safe.

BECKETT
Are you sure?

CASTLE
He’s older now, but it’s definitely him.

RYAN
What—what are we talking about here?

CASTLE
Whatever information Montgomery gave to him, he’s been using it to protect you. But now they’ve sent… Maddox to hunt him down and get it back. If we don’t get to him before Maddox does, you’ll never be safe again.

[OPENING TITLES]

--
ACT TWO
[09:02 INT. BECKETT’S APARTMENT - DAY]

RYAN
This guy who Maddox is looking for, he’s the key. We find him, we find Montgomery’s file.

CASTLE
Which could lead to who’s behind this whole thing, including your mother’s murder.

[Beckett is struggling with this new information.]

RYAN
And all the times you talked, he never gave you a name, even a fake one?

CASTLE
No.

RYAN
Or where he worked?

CASTLE
No.

RYAN
Where he lived?

CASTLE
No, nothing like that. He, um… he called my cell phone. Uh, two nights ago, uh, eh, but from a blocked number.

RYAN
I’ll run your phone records, see if I can trace the number that he called from.

[Ryan leaves and Castle turns to Beckett. She sits down to process and he sits across from her.]

BECKETT
This was supposed to be over. I can’t go back again. Not now.

CASTLE
Well, now we don’t have a choice. If Maddox gets to him before we do—

BECKETT
But I don’t know how to do this. I’m not even a cop anymore.

CASTLE
I’ll tell you exactly what we do.

[Castle picks up the photo of a young Michael Smith.]

CASTLE
We figure out who this is.

[Beckett sighs.]

CASTLE
We’ve done it before and with less to go on. And when we do, we lay all of this to rest, and we go back to where we were. This is what you’re great at. And I’m not so bad myself. So, what do we know? We know this guy is about sixty. He’s a longtime New Yorker. Uh… friends with Montgomery, so he may have connections to law enforcement.

BECKETT
He, um… He seems prominent. Wealthy.

[Castle looks at the photo.]

CASTLE
That’s right. And he has been that way ever since this photo was taken.

BECKETT
How do you know that?

CASTLE
Look at his wrist. That’s a Nautilus 3800. It was ten-grand when it came out in 1981…that’s the year Montgomery was married, May of 1981. How many of these watches could possibly have been sold in five months?

--
[11:05, EXT. STREET - DAY]
[Esposito stands near a VP Russell protest. He sees a soldier exit a recruitment office and follows.]

--
[11:24, EXT. COVERED ALLEY - DAY]
[A jeep slows to a stop. Esposito is in the jeep with the soldier.]

CASS
Javi, I can’t do what you’re asking.

ESPOSITO
I took a bullet for you, Cass. Did you forget that?

CASS
I can’t tap into the DOD database without authorization. I’ll lose everything, man.

ESPOSITO
Only if you get caught. And you won’t.

[Esposito pulls out a file.]

ESPOSITO
I bought this from a liquidator, cash. Soon as we’re done, I’ll wipe the drive, ditch the box. It’ll never come back to you. He’s former army. Special Forces, Delta—I don’t know.

[Esposito shows Cass a photo.]

ESPOSITO
This guy shot a friend of mine, almost killed her. He’s gonna keep coming unless he’s stopped. I need to ID him. You need to help me.

--
[12:17, INT. BECKETT’S APARTMENT - DAY]

CASTLE (on phone)
Okay. Yes. Thank you. (hangs up) All right, the watch company says that 17 of the 3800s were sold in New York in 1981 between January and May.

BECKETT
And did they give you names of any of these clients?

CASTLE
No, but 9 of the 17 watches were given as gifts to a legal team at the law firm of PPC after they won a civil suit against big tobacco.

BECKETT
Winning a tobacco lawsuit would get a lot of publicity.

CASTLE
With any luck, we’ll ID this guy before Ryan even traces that call.

--
[12:43, INT. PRECINCT, BULLPEN - DAY]

RYAN
What do you mean you can’t trace the call? Why the hell not? Look, I’m on the clock here. I need to know who made that call. Now. But… Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Just put Officer Hoben on. He’s the guy I usually deal with over there.

--
[12:56, INT. BECKETT’S APARTMENT - DAY]
[Beckett does an internet search on Pennington, Parker, Tobacco Lawsuit 1981.]

BECKETT
Okay, so this is the PPC legal team that won the suit, but I…don’t see him.

CASTLE
It was a nine-man team. There’s only eight here. He must be the missing lawyer.

BECKETT
Or he’s not a lawyer at all.

CASTLE
Or he is a lawyer, but…he operates…behind the scenes. He would be, um, “of counsel,” like Michael Clayton.

BECKETT
Castle, this photo is thirty years old. We have no idea if this guy still works at that law firm--

[phone rings]

BECKETT (CONT’D)
--or if he ever worked there at all. (Beckett clicks the speakerphone) Beckett.

RYAN (on phone)
Bad news.

[INT. PRECINCT, BULLPEN/BECKETT’S APARTMENT - DAY]

RYAN (CONT’D)
The number the guy called Castle from came from a burner phone, and it’s out of service. Whoever this guy is, he covered his tracks. Look, we put out alerts for Maddox. We circulated his photo all over the state. Someone will spot him.

CASTLE
Well, we can’t wait for that. Did you get anything?

RYAN
Well, there is one thing, but it’s a long shot. The guy used voice-over-internet instead of normal cell service, but he made a call in a bad signal area that got routed through a wireless network.

CASTLE
Well, if it’s a network, you’ll have an IP address.

RYAN
Yeah, and we traced it, um…

[Ryan searches for the info.]

RYAN (CONT’D)
It’s not even in New York.

BECKETT
Then where is it?

RYAN
The call went through a wireless network that’s registered to a Magellan yacht club in Westport, Connecticut.

BECKETT
Thanks, Ryan.

[Beckett does an internet search.]

CASTLE
He must be a member of this club. Maybe there’s a picture of him somewhere posted on this site.

[Castle searches the site while Beckett looks at the anti-tobacco lawyers.]

BECKETT
Castle. Look.

[Beckett points to a name.]

BECKETT (CONT’D)
On the “of counsel” attorney list. Now look at the board of directors.

[Castle touches the computer screen.]

CASTLE
Michael Smith. That’s him.

--
[14:33, INT. MICHAEL SMITH’S HOME - DAY]
[Beckett breaks the door in, her gun ready. Castle follows. They find a bloody Michael Smith unconscious, tied to a chair.]

CASTLE
Maddox found him first.

[Castle checks Smith while Beckett rushes to the smoldering fireplace. There’s police department letterhead burning in the flames.]

BECKETT
The file. Castle.

CASTLE
He’s still alive.

--
ACT THREE
[15:00, INT. MICHAEL SMITH’S APARTMENT - DAY]

CASTLE
Mr. Smith, can you hear me?

MEDIC
Sir, I’m asking you to step away.

MALE PARAMEDIC
?

MICHAEL SMITH
The file…She’s not safe.

MALE PARAMEDIC
Strap him in.

MICHAEL SMITH
86.

CASTLE
86? What does that mean?

MICHAEL SMITH
86.

CASTLE
I don’t know what that means.

MEDIC
Sir, we need to get him to the E.R.

MICHAEL SMITH
86 M...

CASTLE
86? I—I don’t understand. Wait.

MEDIC
Sir, we have to get him to the E.R.

CASTLE
What does that mean?

[Beckett hangs up on her cell phone.]

BECKETT
If Smith makes it, Ryan’s gonna put him under police guard. Make sure that Maddox doesn’t come back and finish off the job.

CASTLE
Smith just gave me a message. He said, “86.” It must be a clue to where the file is.

BECKETT
We know where the file is. It’s right there. It’s burnt to a crisp.

CASTLE
No. smith is too smart to only keep one copy and in his apartment. He’s too careful for that. It’s…it’s a code, and the answer’s here somewhere.

[Castle and Beckett look through file cabinets. Castle wipes his brow and continues searching frantically. He shuts one drawer and opens another one, but Beckett pushes it closed.]

BECKETT
We need to go.

CASTLE
Well, the answer’s got to be here.

[Castle re-opens the file drawer.]

CASTLE (CONT’D)
It’s somewhere here.

BECKETT
Castle, there’s nothing left to find. 86 could mean anything. You’re just grasping at straws.

CASTLE
Yes, I’m grasping at straws. Because if that file is gone, that means they’re coming after you and there’s absolutely nothing I can do. So, yes, if there is a s--straw, I’m…I’m grasping.

[Castle’s voice fades to a whisper and he continues searching.]

BECKETT
Castle, we’re not even supposed to be here. When uniforms come here, they’re gonna arrest us for breaking and entering. We’re running out of time.

CASTLE
W--Uhn-uhn. Smith owns property in lower Manhattan. This one, 86 Markwell Street. That’s what Smith said. He said “86” and then, “Ma-Ma-Ma,” like M-- like something started with “M.” This building, this is where the file is.

--
[16:42, INT. 86 MARKWELL STREET - DAY]
[Castle and Beckett enter a building that is being demolished.]

CASTLE
All right, so…the building has ten stories. How hard can it be to find a file, right?

BECKETT
He would have hid it in a place that was safe from the demolition crew.

CASTLE
Yes, which suggests that Mr. Smith not only owns this building, but he knows it inside and out.

BECKETT
Hey… thanks.

CASTLE (chuckles)
For what? We haven’t found it yet.

BECKETT
Just I--I know I never would have gotten this far if it wasn’t for you.

CASTLE
Hey, we’re gonna get this done. You and me. And we’re gonna start by ruling out all the interior walls. Smith wouldn’t risk hiding it there with all this sheet rock getting torn down. Ceilings are no good either.

[Beckett sees something.]

BECKETT
Castle…

[She walks over to the mailboxes that Smith opened many episodes ago and sees M. Smith listed on one of the boxes.]

BECKETT
Michael Smith, 523. He didn’t just own the building.

CASTLE
He had an office on the fifth floor.

[A gun cocks behind them. Beckett and Castle turn to look.]

MADDOX
Well, that’s some helpful information. Turn around. Hands behind your back.

[They stand and keep their hands down.]

MADDOX
You just don’t know when to quit, do you?

CASTLE
So, you convinced Smith to tell you where the file was.

MADDOX
He told me it was hidden in a floor safe, but he didn’t tell me exactly where. Good thing you guys cleared that up.

[Maddox zip-ties Castle’s hands together.]

BECKETT
You didn’t kill him in case you couldn’t find the file.

MADDOX
And once I do, I’m finally gonna settle our account.

[Maddox zip-ties Beckett’s hands together. Maddox shoves them into a room.]

MADDOX
See you soon.

[Maddox closes and locks the door behind him.]

CASTLE
Okay, we got a minute, maybe two, to get the hell out of here.

BECKETT
Castle, how tight are your zip-ties? Can you move your hands at all?

CASTLE
Mm, no, just barely.

BECKETT
Do you have anything sharp in your pocket, like a knife?

CASTLE
Uh… no.

BECKETT
Nail clippers?

CASTLE
No. Who carries nail clippers?

BECKETT
Do you have keys?

CASTLE
No, it’s a fob. It’s a remote. There’s--there’s—there’s a—a drywall screw. Perfect.

BECKETT
That—That’s not gonna help.

CASTLE
Ah, I beg to differ. All I have to do is grab the zip tie and… saw through.

[Castle tries to free Beckett.]

--
[18:48, INT. 86 MARKWELL STREET, FIFTH FLOOR - DAY]
[Maddox uses some equipment to open the floor and reach Smith’s safe.]

--
[19:06, INT. 86 MARKWELL STREET, LOCKED ROOM - DAY]
[Castle continues to try to saw through the zip ties.]

CASTLE
I am barely making a dent in this thing.

[Beckett stares at the door.]

BECKETT
Castle, I hear footsteps. He’s coming. Hurry.

CASTLE
If we got murdered right now, I’d feel so ripped off!

[Castle stops sawing and turns around.]

BECKETT
Yeah, me too.

CASTLE
At least…at least we had last night. We should’ve done that four years ago.

[The door opens.]

ESPOSITO
Done what four years ago?

[Beckett and Castle stare at him slack-jawed.]

--
[19:32, INT. 86 MARKWELL STREET - DAY]

ESPOSITO
Maddox’s real name is Cedric Marks. Once he finished his tour, he got a job at a place called Arantus Solutions, a kind of black-ops military contractor.

CASTLE
How’d all that lead you here?

ESPOSITO
Well, once I got his name, I put a bolo out on his car. A uniform spotted it outside this building. When I came to check on it, that’s when I saw your car.

BECKETT
Wait, wait, Espo. 523 is around the corner. You got an extra piece?

ESPOSITO
Yeah.

[Esposito crouches down and hands her the gun in his ankle holster.]

CASTLE
Nice. What about for me?

ESPOSITO
Oh, you mean an extra extra piece?

[Esposito and Beckett continue forward. Castle follows, raising his eyebrows at Esposito’s attitude.]

CASTLE
Wow.

--
[20:04, INT. 86 MARKWELL STREET, SUITE 523 - DAY]
[Maddox uses listening equipment and cracks Smith’s safe. Beckett and Esposito continue forward. Maddox puts down his gun to open the safe. He reaches in to take the file just as Beckett reaches the open door.]

BECKETT
Don’t move. Don’t even breathe. Reach for it, and I’ll blow your head off.

MADDOX
Okay, Detective. You’re in charge.

BECKETT
Now slowly reach down and hand me the file.

[Maddox pulls an extra piece from his jacket so the others can’t see. He reaches forward with one hand and points his gun backward with the other. Maddox lifts the file and a trigger lifts in the safe. The others run for cover and the safe explodes. They re-enter 523 coughing from the debris. Maddox is dead on the floor.]

ESPOSITO
He’s gone.

CASTLE
Thanks for the warning, Smith.

BECKETT
He knew that Maddox would show up here first.

CASTLE
What the…?

[Castle catches some of the debris.]

CASTLE
The file.

ACT FOUR
[21:40, INT. 86 MARKWELL STREET, SUITE 523 - DAY]

GATES
So, let me see if I understand. As luck would have it, you three were in the neighborhood taking a walk?

CASTLE
Well, many people consider that the best form of exercise. It’s low impact, it has…

[Gates glares at him and he stops talking.]

GATES
Then you heard an explosion, and as concerned private citizens, you rushed inside to check it out?

BECKETT
Yeah, that’s right.

GATES
Is that how you remember it?

ESPOSITO
Yes, sir.

CASTLE
Captain Gates, I can personally vouch for…

GATES
I am not interested, Mr. Castle, as you specialize in fiction. Let’s say you happened to be in the area. How do you explain the fact that Maddox, the killer we’re searching for and the man who shot you last year, is the one lying there dead?

CASTLE
Bad karma.

[Esposito grabs Castle's arm and Castle shuts up.]

GATES
Detective Ryan…

[Ryan turns around. Esposito doesn’t look happy.]

GATES
Do you know anything about this?

RYAN
Just that it appears the safe was rigged to blow when Maddox opened it.

GATES
And what was in that safe?

RYAN
Hard to say. Papers of some kind.

[Gates turns to Beckett.]

GATES
And I don’t suppose you know what was in those papers and why Maddox was here?

[Beckett shakes her head.]

BECKETT
Like I said, we were just walking by.

--
[22:47, INT. BECKETT’S APARTMENT - NIGHT]

BECKETT
We were so close. That file would’ve told us who’s at the center of this and who killed my mom.

[Esposito joins Beckett and Castle in her living room and hands them beer.]

ESPOSITO
Well, at least Maddox won’t be coming after you.

BECKETT
They’ll just send somebody else.

CASTLE
Unless whoever’s behind all this doesn’t know the file’s been destroyed. Maybe he thinks it’s still in play.

BECKETT
I wouldn’t bet on that, would you?

[Footsteps creak outside her door.]

ESPOSITO
Shh.

[Esposito and Beckett go for their guns. Castle grabs a blunt object. Esposito opens the door with a gun pointed at the visitor.]

RYAN
Whoa!

[Ryan reaches for his gun, then relaxes, panting with the shock.]

RYAN
You want to out that thing away?

[Esposito doesn’t lower his gun.]

ESPOSITO
Well, if it isn’t Judas.

RYAN
Yeah, okay, pal. You want to give it a break?

BECKETT
Guys, come on.

[Esposito puts away his gun.]

ESPOSITO
What are you doing here?

RYAN
I came to bring you this.

[Ryan enters and gives Beckett a plastic bag full of confetti.]

BECKETT
Paper from the safe?

[Ryan nods.]

--
[23:37, INT. BECKETT’S APARTMENT - NIGHT]
[Beckett pours the confetti onto her kitchen table.]

ESPOSITO
Now, what are we looking for?

BECKETT
Names, places, dates— anything that tells us what was in these files and why someone is so desperate to keep it hidden.

[The team works on the confetti jigsaw puzzle.]

ESPOSITO (sigh)
Five hours, and all I’ve got is something the size of a playing card. And not only that, it’s blank.

RYAN
Yeah, well, I got “ending balance” here. I think it’s some kind of bank statement.

BECKETT
Not just a bank statement.

[Castle and Beckett piece together “CASH xxxxxxx”]

CASTLE
Whoa. This is part of a money order made out to cash. That could be a payoff.

BECKETT
And whoever it went to is probably out guy.

CASTLE
Well, that would make sense.

RYAN
Yeah? In what way?

CASTLE
Well, all of this started when Montgomery and his cop buddies started kidnapping mobsters for ransom money.

BECKETT
And we know that someone found out and demanded a cut of that money.

CASTLE
And whoever that is, there’s something in this file he does not want to get out.

[Esposito places two more scraps together.]

ESPOSITO
Whoa, this--this has numbers on it. And it’s machine printed. It’s…an eight-digit string, so it’s not a phone number.

CASTLE
Wait a minute. Oh, that’s the—

ESPOSITO
This is the back of that money order. And these digits, 0-8-6-7-2-2-4-1, that’s the account it was deposited in.

BECKETT
If we figure out whose account that is, that should give us a name.

RYAN
And I think I know a way. Uh, do you remember when we were checking banking accounts for the dirty bomb investigation? We used the federal banking database.

ESPOSITO
And I still remember the password.

--
[Esposito types on Beckett's computer.]

ESPOSITO
I'm not sure they even track accounts going back this far.

BECKETT
Whoever owns that account is the person that killed my mom. Run it.

[Esposito runs the database search.]

ESPOSITO
The account was closed 19 years ago. It belonged to a guy named William H. Bracken.

[Beckett moves forward as something on the table catches her eye. She shows them a campaign flyer.]

BECKETT
You mean Senator William Bracken?

[They all exchange significant looks.]

--
ACT FIVE
[25:49, INT. BECKETT'S APARTMENT - NIGHT]

RYAN
According to the bio on his campaign website, Senator Bracken was Assistant District Attorney for New York from '88 till '92.

[Beckett doesn't respond.]

CASTLE
Kate?

[Beckett gives Castle a sincere calm smile.]

BECKETT
I'm fine, Castle.

[Castle gives a small smile back.]

BECKETT
Bracken's timeline fits. That's when Montgomery was kidnapping gangsters.

ESPOSITO
Bracken must have heard about what they were doing through the grapevine.

BECKETT
And then he realized that he couldn't charge mobsters because they wouldn't testify and then the cops would walk.

RYAN
So instead, he decided to get in on the action. If they were collecting ransom from mob guys, he wanted a taste in the form of cash money orders.

CASTLE
Right, but as his political star rose from congressman to senator, he realized he had to make sure the scandal never came to light.

[A cell phone rings.]

BECKETT
So then people started dying.

CASTLE
This would explain...

RYAN (answers cell)
Ryan. Yeah.

[Ryan steps away to take the call.]

CASTLE (CONT'D)
...why he's coming after you right now. Word is Bracken's being groomed to run for president.

ESPOSITO
He's trying to clean house, and you're next. We need to take him down.

BECKETT
How? All we have are a bunch of numbers that are meaningless to anyone but us. We have absolutely no hard evidence against him.

[Ryan hangs up and returns.]

RYAN
Uh, I may have the next best thing. I just got word that Michael Smith is out of surgery, and he's awake.

[Castle and Becket exchange a significant look.]

CASTLE
Smith is the key. He can connect all this to Bracken.

BECKETT
Okay, Castle and I are gonna go talk to him. You guys see if you can find the link between Maddox and Bracken.

--
[27:01, INT. HOSPITAL - NIGHT]
[Beckett and Castle walk down the hallway and meet the uniform guarding Smith's room.]

BECKETT
Ryan call you?

UNIFORM
Yeah, yeah.

[He opens the door for them.]

MICHAEL SMITH
You're alive.

CASTLE
Join the club.

MICHAEL SMITH
What about the other file?

[Castle looks to Beckett, then back at Smith.]

CASTLE
Maddox opened the safe.

BECKETT
We put enough of it together to know that Bracken took dirty money

MICHAEL SMITH (sigh)
Close the door.

[Castle closes it.]

MICHAEL SMITH
The irony is he used that money to finance his first congressional campaign.

BECKETT
We need proof of that, along with anything else that he did.

MICHAEL SMITH
There is no proof.

BECKETT
Well, there's you. You can testify.

MICHAEL SMITH
That will never happen. You see, Roy Montgomery once did me a favor. So I kept that file and I protected you, at great personal cost, because I owed Roy. But I don't owe you.

BECKETT
So you're just gonna let him g--get away with murder?

MICHAEL SMITH
You don't understand, Detective. He's protected, untouchable. You're just gonna end up dead, and so am I. Now as it is, my best bet is to just...disappear. I suggest you do the same.

BECKETT
You know that you know too much, just like Roy and my mom did. They found you once. They will find you again, and your only bet is to work with me.

[Beckett stares Smith down.]

MICHAEL SMITH
I'm tired. You need to go.

[They leave unhappily.]

--
[28:57, EXT. HOSPITAL - NIGHT]

CASTLE (on cell)
Okay. Thank you. Yeah, you just let me know if you figure anything out. (hangs up) All right. That was Ryan. He said they found no concrete connection between Maddox and Bracken.

BECKETT
Yeah, and we won't find one. He's too careful.

CASTLE
Smith is the connection.

BECKETT
Yeah, but he won't cooperate, Castle. He's already made that clear.

CASTLE
This is his only play. He's smart enough to know that. He just needs a little bit of encouragement.

[Beckett looks down, considering Castle's words.]

BECKETT
Okay.

[They head back towards the hospital and see the uniform that was guarding Smith exiting the building.]

BECKETT
Hey! Wait. Why aren't you with Smith?

UNIFORM
Dispatch called and told me to stand down.

[Beckett and Castle run inside.]

--
[29:33, INT. HOSPITAL - NIGHT]
[Beckett and Castle hear the flat-line as they run to Smith's room.]

DOCTOR
I'm calling it.

[A nurse exits.]

BECEKTT
Wait. Wait. What happened?

NURSE
Looks like a heart attack. We did everything we could.

--
[29:48, INT. BECKETT'S APARTMENT - NIGHT]

SENTAOR BRACKEN (television)
Ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to introduce to you the vice president of the United States, Mr. John Russell.

VICE PRESIDENT RUSSELL (television)
Thank you, Senator Bracken.

[Beckett pauses the news clip on Bracken's face and drops the remote on the table. Castle steps up next to her.]

BECKETT
I finally figured out who he is - the guy that killed my mom - and there's nothing I can do about it. Did Ryan talk to you? Did he check those security cameras around Smith's room?

CASTLE
Yes.

[Beckett turns around expectantly.]

BECKETT
And?

CASTLE
The cameras were disabled.

BECKETT
Okay. So they're coming for me.

CASTLE
Ryan's got two teams stationed outside.

BECKETT
And what about tomorrow and the day after that?

CASTLE
Let me take you someplace, Kate, someplace you'll be safe.

[Beckett sighs and drops her head to Castle's chest and they hold each other.]

BECKETT
I'll never be safe.

--
ACT SIX
[30:57, INT. BECKETT'S APARTMENT - NIGHT]
[Beckett smiles as she remembers a picture of her with her mom at Christmas. There's a gunshot and the image changes to the photograph of her mother's corpse in the alley. Beckett wraps up her mother's ring on her necklace and holsters her gun. She looks at Castle, still asleep in her bed, and exits the apartment. Castle bolts up in bed, daylight streaming into the room.]

--
[Castle, Ryan, and Esposito are in Beckett's apartment.]

RYAN
What do you mean, she's not here?

CASTLE
I mean, she's not here and she's not answering her cell.

ESPOSITO
I thought you had a detail on her.

RYAN
I did! I do! If she would've left this building, they would've seen her.

CASTLE
Not if she didn't want them to.

[Ryan and Esposito look at him and Castle realizes something.]

CASTLE
Where's Senator Bracken right now?

[Ryan starts dialing his cell.]

ESPOSITO
Oh, man, you don't think that she--

[Castle puts his hand up.]

CASTLE
Just...

RYAN (on cell)
Yeah, it's Detective Kevin Ryan, badge number 4-2-3-4-4. Can I get a 20 on Senator Bracken? (to Castle) He's hosting a fundraiser at the Widmark Hotel.

CASTLE
As if anyone else has called to check on him.

RYAN (on cell)
Did anyone call to check on him? Okay. Thanks. (hangs up) Beckett phoned them an hour ago.

CASTLE
She's gonna kill Senator Bracken.

--
[32:17, INT. WIDMARK HOTEL, LOBBY - DAY]
[Beckett strides in purposefully and takes a look at the security situation. She catches sight of Officer Hastings (ep. 4x02 Heroes and Villains) at the metal detector and walks straight for her.]

BECKETT
Hey, Hastings.

OFFICER HASTINGS
Hey, Detective Beckett. They got you on security detail, too?

BECKETT
Yeah. You know, I need to speak with someone. You think I could jump this line?

[Hastings looks around, either slightly unsure or checking for other cops watching, then unhooks the barrier.]

OFFICER HASTINGS
For you? Of course.

BECKETT
Thank you.

[Beckett runs down the hall.]

--
[33:00, INT. WIDMARK HOTEL, EVENT HALL - DAY]
[Bracken shakes hands with a smile as cameras click.]

SENATOR BRACKEN
Good to see you. You with me on that? I'm supposed to be kissing babies.

[Beckett enters. Flash of her mother's crime scene photo in a file.]

MADDOX (V.O.)
You're wasting your time, Detective.

[Flash of Beckett shooting Dick Coonan (ep. 2x13 Sucker Punch) in the precinct.]

MADDOX (V.O.)
You have no idea what you're up against.

[Beckett makes her way closer to Bracken.]

MCCALLISTER (V.O.)
You woke the dragon.

[Flashes of Hal Lockwood (eps. 3x13 Knockdown, 3x24 Knockout) killing McCallister in his orange jumpsuit.]

MCCALLISTER (V.O.)
And this is so much bigger than you realize.

[Flash of Montgomery's last moments.]

MONTGOMERY
This is my spot, Kate.

[Kate continues to Bracken.]

MONTGOMERY (V.O.)
This is where I stand.

[Flash of Montgomery getting shot and Beckett flat-lining on the way to the emergency room. Ryan, Esposito, and Castle run into the lobby. Beckett continues towards Bracken with determination, and something in her hand. She bumps into a security personnel and apologizes, continuing forward. The boys bolt for the event hall, Ryan holding his badge as they run. Beckett holds something in her hand as she steps right up to Bracken. She drops it in his pocket and keeps moving, Bracken none the wiser. The boys keep running.]

SENATOR BRACKEN
Are you with me on that?

CROWD
Yeah! (applause)

SENATOR BRACKEN
Thank you.

[A phone beeps and a confused Bracken pulls it out of his pocket.]

SENATOR BRACKEN
Please excuse me just--just--just for one minute. Please.

[Bracken steps away from the crowd and answers the phone.]

SENATOR BRACKEN
Hello?

BECKETT
This is Kate Beckett.

[Bracken turns his head in surprise.]

BECKETT
I can see you know the name.

[Bracken starts looking around.]

BECKETT
That's right. I'm watching.

SENATOR BRACKEN
I don't know what this is about, but I am not interested in playing games.

BECKETT
Well, you better get interested.

[Bracken turns around and sees Beckett on the hotel phone, staring at him.]

BECKETT
I have information that will destroy your career and I will use it unless you do exactly as I say.

[The boys finally rush into the event hall, but security stops them. Ryan badges him.]

RYAN
We need to talk to Senator Bracken.

SECURITY
He's in a meeting with a donor.

CASTLE
What donor? Where is he?

SECURITY
He didn't say.

[Ryan sighs and pulls out his cell phone.]

ESPOSITO
Who you calling? Gates?

RYAN
Um...

ESPOSITO
Put that phone away or I'll break your friggin' arm.

RYAN
Javi, we can't let her throw her life away.

CASTLE
We don't know she's doing that.

RYAN (lowered voice)
What do you mean? You're the one who said she was gonna kill the guy!

[Castle takes Ryan aside.]

CASTLE (lowered voice)
Okay, I know. Okay, yes, that's right, but...but she hasn't done that yet, right? Look, you make that call, you're labeling her an assassin. That's a bell you can't un-ring. So let's not make that call. Not yet.

[Ryan considers for a moment, then hands Esposito his phone, and the boys look around for where Beckett may have gone.]

--
[35:35, INT. WIDMARK HOTEL, KITCHEN - DAY]
[Senator Bracken enters the dark kitchen and Beckett cocks her gun.]

BECKETT
That's far enough.

[Beckett steps out of the shadows.]

SENATOR BRACKEN
What do you want, Ms. Beckett?

BECKETT
The truth.

SENATOR BRACKEN (smirk)
Never expect that from a politician. Besides, if you really had information, wouldn’t you already know the truth?

BECKETT
Roy Montgomery, McCallister, John Raglan, my mother – everyone that you’ve ever had killed, I want you to admit to it.

SENATOR BRACKEN
Your mother’s death was a tragedy, and I am deeply sorry for your loss. But I can’t give you what you want. When I was fourteen, I got to be friends with this boy in the neighborhood, Lamar Dokes. Sweet kid. I used to help him with his homework after school. Well, one day, he doesn’t come to school. so I went by his apartment and the door was open. I walked in and…I found Lamar lying on his mattress… dead; his little sister the same way. His mother was in the bedroom. She had hanged herself. Now she left a note. She’d list her job. She was being evicted. And I thought, how could a woman be so desperate, so without hope, that she could crush up pills, put them in hot chocolate, and give them to her kids? And that was the moment…the moment I knew I wanted to help make people’s lives better. And I have.

[Beckett is trembling in anger.]

SENATOR BRACKEN
I strengthened the safety net to protect kids like Lamar. I created jobs in those neighborhoods. I’ve done great things…just as you’ve done great things.

[Beckett lowers her gun slightly and stares at Bracken dubiously as he gives her an innocent, puppy dog look.]

BECKETT
Who do you think you’re talking to? How can you justify yourself to me?

[The righteous look on Bracken’s face fades.]

BECKETT
My mother was stabbed in an alley because of you. She bled to death alone in a pile of garbage! So save me your campaign speeches about the great things!

SENATOR BRACKEN
You sound a bit delusional, you know? But then again, you are you? You’re a disgraced cop, obsessed with her mother’s murder. And who am I? I’m a decent man looking out for the little guy. That’s who the public sees. And every time they elect me, I’m humbled. I strive harder to live up to that ideal. I want to be that man. And I won’t let you or anyone else get in my way.

[Bracken’s expression finally turns threatening.]

BECKETT
I don’t think you’re in a position to threaten, Senator.

SENATOR BRACKEN
See, here’s what you don’t understand – it’s not who has the gun, it’s who has the power. Do you really think that’s you?

[Beckett realizes that he still does have the power. Bracken turns to leave in victory.]

BECKETT
I have the file.

[Bracken stops walking.]

BECKETT
Smith had another copy.

[Bracken turns to face her.]

BECKETT
0-8-6-7-2-2-4-1.

[Bracken finally looks slightly concerned as he recognizes the number.]

BECKETT
That’s the number of the bank account where you deposited the money orders. So you’re right. It is about who holds the power. Now I could release that file and destroy you, but what would that mean for my life expectancy? So here’s how it is – the deal that you had with Smith, that’s our deal now. And if anything happens to me, or anyone that I care about, that file goes public. Am I clear?

[Bracken doesn’t like her proposal and doesn’t want to admit to anything verbally.]

BECKETT
That’s a yes-or-no question.

SENATOR BRACKEN
Yes.

BECKETT
And one more thing. Whoever it is you think I am, whatever it is you think you know about me, you have no idea what I’m capable of or how far I will go. I am done being afraid. It’s your turn now.

[Beckett hits Bracken in the head with the butt of her gun.]

BECKETT
That’s gonna leave a nasty scar. Every time you see it, think of me.

[Beckett walks off, leaving Bracken to contemplate his bleeding wound. The boys rush in. Castle looks at Beckett and the gun in her hand.]

CASTLE
Kate, tell me you didn’t…

[Castle sees Bracken walk off behind Beckett, holding the wound on his face. Beckett holsters her gun.]

BECKETT
We reached an understanding.

ESPOSITO
But what about your mom?

BECKETT
I’ll get justice for her. Just not today.

[Castle’s expression turns proud.]

BECKETT
Until then, get it for others.

--
[41:27, INT. PRECINCT, GATES’S OFFICE - DAY]

GATES
Your resignation has been accepted. The matter is settled.

BECKETT
Sir, I have the top case-closure rate in the precinct. And now that the man that shot me is dead, that particular case will no longer be an issue.

GATES
Really? Because it seems to be the gift that keeps on giving. I’m told we put a Michael Smith under guard at the hospital. What was his role in this?

BECKETT
I…I don’t know.

GATES
I don’t believe you. You’re covering for someone, and I know who it is. But I don’t intend to dig up the past and tarnish Roy Montgomery’s reputation. The fact is, I…I admire your loyalty. I hope you feel that for me someday.

BECKETT
Does that mean I can show up for duty tomorrow?

--
[42:19, INT. PRECINCT, BULLPEN - DAY]

CASTLE
No? What does she mean, no?

BECKETT
Well, I have to serve out my suspension, same as Esposito.

CASTLE
What are you gonna do in the meantime?

BECKETT
Oh, I’m pretty sure I’ll think of something.

[Beckett reaches over below the camera frame and Castle’s jaw drops in surprise and he looks down, then back at the smirking Beckett.]
