<<< EPISODE 4x22SEASON 5 >>>

ACT ONE
[00:00, EXT. ROOFTOP - DAY]
[Beckett slips off the edge of a rooftop, grabs the ledge just before she falls, and hangs on for dear life. She looks down, then tries for a better grip on the ledge. One hand slips off and the ground spins below her.]

CASTLE (O.S.)
Beckett!

BECKETT
Castle!

CASTLE
Beckett!

BECKETT
Castle, I'm here!

[Beckett is now hanging on by the tip of the fingers on her left hand.]

CASTLE
Beckett, hang on!

[Beckett's hand slips.]

BECKETT
No!

--
3 DAYS EARLIER

--
[01:16, INT. CASTLE LOFT - EARLY MORNING]
[Alexis sits at the table looking harried, scribbling frantically. Castle walks in wearing his robe.]

CASTLE
Either this is the most boring dream I've ever had, or you can't sleep either.

ALEXIS
It's not a dream. More like a nightmare.

CASTLE
Is this about your valedictorian speech?

ALEXIS
It's my chance to say something important, something worthy. I don't want to blow it, but I feel like I have nothing to say.

CASTLE
You mean, nothing compared to the great sacred texts of mankind or...

[Castle looks over the books Alexis has on the table.]

CASTLE
...Winston Churchill's speech to Harrow or Steve Jobb's address to Stanford. You know, maybe you should pick some speeches just a little less daunting to compare yours to. Like, um, Say Anything, or Twilight.

ALEXIS
It's not supposed to be this hard.

CASTLE
You know, the most worthwhile things in life are often the most difficult. For example...

[Castle's phone rings. It's Beckett.]

CASTLE
Wow, that really is a smart phone.

[Alexis shakes her head.]

--
[02:01, EXT. STREET - DAY]
[Beckett and Castle walk through the morning fog to the crime scene with their coffees.]

BECKETT
Of course you don't understand why she's taking her graduation speech so seriously, you're probably the guy who had nothing on but boxers underneath his gown.

CASTLE
That is so insulting. If you must know, I was naked underneath.

BECKETT (scoff/chuckle)
Oh, I'm sorry. I stand corrected.

[Castle grins.]

BECKETT
So, how is the father of the graduate taking it?

CASTLE
I already have a plan to drown my sorrows. After the ceremony, my mother goes out for the Hamptons, Alexis will be doing her all-nighter, I will be distracting myself with a double feature of The Killer and Hard Boiled.

BECKETT
Wow, that is a double feature.

CASTLE
You like John Woo?

BECKETT
The bloodier the better.

[Castle pauses, considering her.]

CASTLE
You wouldn't want to join me, would you?

BECKETT (grinning)
Actually, I'd love to.

[Castle raises his eyebrows as he watches her continue to the crime scene. She stops when he doesn't follow.]

BECKETT
You coming, Castle?

CASTLE
Yeah.

[Castle starts from his pondering and steps forward to join her. He thinks over what this might mean for them with a slight, excited smile.]

ESPOSITO
Hey.

BECKETT
So?

ESPOSITO
So, we've got a Hispanic male, late twenties. Cabby spotted the body about an hour ago and called it in.

BECKETT
We get an ID?

ESPOSITO
No, we checked his pockets, but there's no phone, keys, or wallet. We're checking prints right now. From the blood trail, it looks like he was shot before he entered the alley.

LANIE
He was hit in the shoulder with what looks like a .357, but the kill shot: pointblank execution style with a 9mm.

CASTLE
Two guns. Could be more than one shooter.

BECKETT
Was CSU able to trace that blood trail from the first shot?

ESPOSITO
Starts around the corner. There's no visible point of origin, but the teams are still looking.

BECKETT
Well, this is a bad neighborhood. Maybe it was a mugging gone wrong?

LANIE
Maybe. These grooves in his shoulder indicate that he was carrying something, and it was heavy. I'd say at least thirty pounds. I'm even seeing traces of skin tissue in his fingernail. I may be able to get DNA, but I'll know a lot more once I get him back to the morgue.

CASTLE
Uh...his pockets may have been emptied, but it looks like he was trying to hide something in his shoe.

[Beckett lifts the pant leg and pulls out a small black case with metal tools.]

BECKETT
Lock picks?

CASTLE
Now, why would someone be needing lock picks?

--
[03:48, INT. PRECINCT, BULLPEN - DAY]

RYAN (O.S.)
He's a thief.

[Ryan puts the victim's picture on the murder board.]

RYAN
Orlando Costas. Couple of domestic B&Es, but suspected of a dozen more. He used to run with the Cazadores.

CASTLE
Cazadores?

RYAN
They're a violent street gang that deals in drugs, arms, and larsony, but all of Orlando's priors are back when he was a teenager. He hasn't been arrested in years.

CASTLE
Maybe he got back in the game.

RYAN
I don't know. He went a long way to clean up his act. Did four years, active in the military, discharged with honors last year. He spent his rotation as an MP in Germany.

CASTLE
Military police? He really did clean up his act.

BECKETT
If this guy went straight, then how did he end up dead in an alley? Did you check for next of kin?

RYAN
Uh, his folks are dead, but we managed to track down a girlfriend, Marisol Castañeda. Esposito's bringing her in right now.

--
[04:26, INT. PRECINCT, INTERVIEW ROOM - DAY]

MARISOL CASTANEDA
All I know is, he was with me in bed last night when I went to sleep. I woke up this morning and both him and my car were gone.

BECKETT
Where did he go?

MARISOL CASTANEDA
I figured he'd gone to the career center to check the job listings. He does that every morning.

CASTLE
He'd been looking for work?

MARISOL CASTANEDA
For months. Orlando served this country. You'd think that'd mean something, but it's been tough, especially after my hours got cut.

BECKETT
So he was under financial pressure? Is it possible that he went back to old habits?

MARISOL CASTANEDA
No.

BECKETT
Look, Marisol, we know that he ran with the Cazadores. Do you think that--

MARISOL CASTANEDA
I said, "no"! He went through hell to escape that life. It's why he enlisted. To get out. To be a better man for me. A better father to our son! So how about you stop trying to make this his fault and find whoever killed him.

[Beckett processes Marisol's anger.]

BECKETT
What kind of car do you have?

--
[05:22, EXT. STREET - DAY]
[The team looks over the car they found.]

ESPOSITO
Two blocks away from the alley, blood smeared on the arm rest. This is definitely it.

CASTLE
He was shot somewhere else and then he came here? Why not go home? Why not go get patched up?

BECKETT
He was meeting someone in that alleyway.

[Esposito finds something.]

ESPOSITO
Phone. His last call was 4:47 AM, just before he died.

BECKETT
Run that number.

[Ryan finds something in the back seat.]

RYAN
Okay, Beckett, the gun...it's a .38.

[Ryan sniffs the revolver.]

RYAN
Recently fired.

CASTLE
So it was a shootout. That's how he got the shoulder wound.

BECKETT
Which means wherever he came from, there might be another body.

ESPOSITO
I know where he was coming from.

CASTLE
Where?

ESPOSITO
His last entry was 299 1st Avenue.

CASTLE
Wait, what's at 299 1st Ave?

BECKETT
Captain Montgomery's house.

--
[05:58, INT. MONTGOMERY'S HOUSE - DAY]
[CSU sweeps the house. There's broken glass, bullets, and blood.]

RYAN
We're just thankful no one was hurt.

EVELYN MONTGOMERY
Believe me, so am I. Ever since Roy died, I've slept with his .357 in the nightstand.

BECKETT
So it was just the one guy.

EVELYN MONTGOMERY
As far as I know. He was taking files out of the cabinet. He had Roy's old laptop in his backpack. When he saw me, he pulled his weapon, so - God help me - I shot him. I think I hit him in his shoulder. He fired back...

[She points to the bullet hole in the clock behind her.]

EVELYN MONTGOMERY
...and then he crashed through the window.

[Beckett holds up a photo of the victim.]

BECKETT
Evelyn, was this the guy?

EVELYN MONTGOMERY
Yeah. That's him.

CASTLE
I'm glad Evan and the girls weren't home.

EVELYN MONTGOMERY
Funny thing is, I wasn't supposed to be home either. It's almost like he knew we weren't supposed to be here.

CASTLE
Anything special about those files?

EVELYN MONTGOMERY
There's paperwork, legal documents, notes on Roy's old cases.

[Esposito and Beckett continue connecting the dots back to Beckett's mother's murder.]

ESPOSITO
What about his computer? What--what was on that?

EVELYN MONTGOMERY
His old work files, but mostly I use it for Christmas cards and recipes.

--
[06:57, INT. PRECINCT, BULLPEN - DAY]
[Roy Montgomery's photo goes on the murder board.]

ESPOSITO
They went after Montgomery's files. Not valuables, not cash. And now our thief is dead and the files he took are missing?

[Beckett writes "Broke into Montgomery's. Why?"]

CASTLE
Well, let's not jump to conclusions.

ESPOSITO
What else would it be about? Everyone here thinks Montgomery died bringing a cop killer to justice. We're the only ones who know what he was really involved in, [to Beckett] and his connection to your mother's murder. Beckett, it can't be a coincidence.

BECKETT
Recheck the vic's rap sheet, see if Montgomery was involved in any of his old arrests, and get on that number. I want to know who he was talking to just before he died.

[Castle sits there quietly with his hidden knowledge.]

--
[07:31, INT. PRECINCT, BREAK ROOM - DAY]
[Castle enters as Beckett stirs her coffee and leans against the doorway. Beckett looks up.]

BECKETT
Say something reassuring.

CASTLE
There are thousands of break-ins in New York City every year.

[Beckett smiles slightly at the irony and turns away.]

BECKETT
This one feels different.

CASTLE
Well, that doesn't mean that it is. Montgomery worked hundreds of cases. Just because this guy was after files doesn't mean he was after your mom's case.

BECKETT
Then why is our thief dead? You know, those people that Montgomery was involved with, he said that they wanted me dead. That I was getting too close, and he said that he was gonna give his life in order to protect mine and they still tried to kill me. I wake up sometimes and I think to myself, "How the hell am I still alive?" It's like I'm just waiting for that other shoe to drop. What if this is that other shoe?

[Castle thinks it over quietly, not able to tell her the truth.]

--
OPENING TITLES

--
ACT TWO
[08:35, INT. CASTLE LOFT, OFFICE - EVENING]
[Castle looks over his murder screen. Martha enters.]

CASTLE
Things were finally gettin' better for her. For us. She was just coming out of her shell. And now this?

MARTHA
Do you really think it's related to her mother's murder case?

CASTLE
I hope to God it isn't. Montgomery's friend was very clear, she starts poking around her mother's murder, they'll come after her again. I can't let that happen.

MARTHA
I know.

--
[09:17, INT. PRECINCT, BULLPEN - EVENING]
[Beckett looks over her murder board.]

[INT. PRECINCT, BULLPEN - MORNING]
[Beckett is still staring at the murder board when Castle enters with coffee. Beckett smiles as she takes it.]

BECKETT
Thank you.

CASTLE
Did you get any sleep?

BECKETT
Not much.

CASTLE
Anything new on our victim?

BECKETT
We rechecked Orlando's rap sheet. Montgomery wasn't involved in any of his old arrests. That break-in wasn't personal.

CASTLE
What about the call he made before he was killed?

BECKETT
It's from a burner phone. There's no registered owner.

CASTLE
Hey.

BECKETT
Hm?

CASTLE
You're not in this alone. I'm here.

[Beckett smiles and looks down.]

BECKETT
I know.

[She takes his hand and they look at each other.]

RYAN (O.S.)
Hey.

[Beckett and Castle let go each other's hand as Ryan and Esposito enter.]

ESPOSITO
So we may have been wrong about why they hit Montgomery's.

[Ryan reads from a file.]

RYAN
Witnesses saw a Hispanic male fleeing the alley in a late model maroon Deville. Apparently he had gang ink on his neck: a lion framed by a C?

BECKETT
Cazadores?

ESPOSITO
The very same gang that our victim ran with.

[Beckett heaves a sigh of relief.]

BECKETT
Gangs.

ESPOSITO
If this guy was in that alley, odds are, he killed Orlando.

BECKETT
Did we get a license plate?

RYAN
Uh, no, but according to Gang Task Force, the ride matches the car of one Vicente Delgado, high level shock collar for the Cazadores. And get this, his cousin, Diego Gutierrez, was busted by Montgomery for a double homicide in '95.

ESPOSITO
His lawyers filed a motion for retrial a month after Montgomery was killed.

BECKETT
Find him.

--
[10:49, INT. DELGADO'S PLACE - DAY]
[Delgado is counting his money when the door blows in behind him. He runs for the window.]

RYAN
NYPD! Let me see your hands!

ESPOSITO
Don't move! Don't move! Don't move!

[Esposito rushes in and catches Delgado before he can open the window. They disarm him.]

ESPOSITO
Well, lookie here. A 9mm. Just like the gun that killed Orlando Costas.

--
[11:04, INT. PRECINCT, INTERROGATION - DAY]

VICENTE DELGADO
I already told you, I was nowhere near that alley. Fact is, your witnesses are blind.

BECKETT
The fact is, you knew Orlando Costas.

VICENTE DELGADO
Yeah, I knew him. Once. Before he turned his back.

CASTLE
When was the last time you heard from him?

VICENTE DELGADO
Not in years.

BECKETT
Hours. Just before he was killed, Orlando called a burner cell, same phone that we found on you. So why don't you just admit to it and save yourself thirty years. You had him break into Roy Montgomery's house and steal your cousin's case files and you shot him.

[INT. PRECINCT, OBSERVATION - DAY]
[A uniform enters and hands Esposito a file.]

VICENTE DELGADO
What you got, chica? Huh? Gun's not gonna be a match. So that leaves you with what? A phone call? A couple people saw a very common car.

[Esposito reads the file and looks up at Ryan in surprise. Ryan takes the file and looks at it and is also surprised.]

VICENTE DELGADO
You know why you can't pin this on me, chica?

--
[INT. PRECINCT, INTERROGATION - DAY]

VICENTE DELGADO
I wasn't there.

BECKETT
The hell you weren't!

[Someone knocks on the door.]

BECKETT
That's gonna be ballistics. Last chance to make a deal.

[Beckett and Delgado stare each other down. Delgado scoffs.]

--
[11:54, INT. PRECINCT, OBSERVATION - DAY]
[Beckett storms in, followed by Castle.]

BECKETT
Book him on the drugs and weapons charge and tell the DA I'm gonna want to file for murder one.

ESPOSITO
It wasn't him.

BECKETT
What do you mean, "It wasn't him"?

ESPOSITO
The skin tissue that Lanie was able to scrape from underneath our victim's fingernails, the lab was able to pull DNA. We ran it against Vicente, it's not a match. In fact, it wasn't a match to anyone in the system.

RYAN
But it did match DNA trace evidence found at another crime scene.

[Ryan hands Beckett the file.]

CASTLE
Well at least that's something. What was the crime scene?

ESPOSITO
It was a shooting.

RYAN
Beckett, it was your shooting.

[Beckett looks up from the file. Castle's jaw drops.]

ESPOSITO
DNA confirms that the man who killed Orlando Costas in that alley is the same man who put a bullet in your heart.

[Beckett and Castle look at each other.]

--
ACT THREE
[12:43, INT. PRECINCT, HALLWAY - DAY]
[Beckett sits on a seat in the hallway with the file. Castle sits down next to her and the other two join them.]

BECKETT
No leads for eleven months and now this.

[Beckett looks at Ryan and Esposito.]

BECKETT
Does Gates know?

ESPOSITO
No.

BECKETT
Then we don't tell her. If she finds out this is a match to my shooting, she'll take me off the case.

CASTLE
Maybe you should be off this case.

[Beckett furrows her eyebrows.]

CASTLE
They tried to kill you once, Kate. You keep going on this, they...what's to stop them from trying again?

BECKETT
What's to stop them now?

[Castle can't answer her.]

BECKETT
No. I've been waiting a year for this and I'll be damned if I let someone else screw it up.

[Castle closes her eyes as Beckett walks off. Ryan isn't happy either. The other three exchange worried looks and Castle follows Beckett. Esposito is about to follow when Ryan talks.]

RYAN
Hey, Javier...Man, this just feels wrong. We need to tell Gates.

ESPOSITO
Why? So she can send Beckett home? You think that's gonna work? You think that's gonna stop her? She's gonna investigate this case, Kevin, whether she's on it or not. The least we can do is make sure that we have her back.

--
[14:13, INT. CASTLE LOFT - NIGHT]
[Castle's cell rings.]

CASTLE (on cell)
Hello.

THE ANONYMOUS MR. SMITH (on cell)
I think you know why I'm calling, Mr. Castle.

CASTLE (on cell)
It's you. Thank God. What the hell is going on? Why did they break into Montgomery's place?

THE ANONYMOUS MR. SMITH (on cell)
Oh, most likely it's a cleanup job. Making sure that Montgomery had nothing else incriminating in his files. As long as Beckett drops her investigation, we still hold all the cards.

CASTLE (on cell)
She's already onto our shooter. She's not gonna let go.

THE ANONYMOUS MR. SMITH (on cell)
Then we have a problem. If she doesn't stop, they will retaliate. I can't control the situation if you can't control her.

[Smith hangs up.]

--
[15:00, INT. PRECINCT, HOLDING - DAY]
[A uniform escorts Delgado to a holding cell where Beckett is waiting outside.]

BECKETT
We got enough on the drug and weapons charges to put you away for at least five years. Five years of your life.

[Beckett opens the cell and enters. She sits on the bench.]

BECKETT
What's that worth?

[Delgado looks away.]

BECKETT
I know you didn't kill Orlando. But he called you and he talked to you for two minutes, and you were in that alley. Why? There's nobody in here but you and me, there's no cameras, no microphones, no one's listening. I can make all those charges go away.

[Delgado looks at her.]

BECKETT
Five years of your life back. But you gotta tell me what you know.

[Delgado sits down next to her.]

VICENTE DELGADO
Called last week, talking about 'times were bad'. So I told him, 'I can get you some work'. But he knew if he came back to the Cazadores, there'd be no leaving this time. And all he really wanted was a loan who could help him out for old times' sake.

BECKETT
Did you give it to him?

VICENTE DELGADO
No. He begged me. Said he was good for it. Said he had something big coming up. Something that'd make him whole.

BECKETT
Did he say what?

VICENTE DELGADO
No. But that morning, my phone rings, and he said it'd all gone wrong. He was desperate, talking about 'they want to kill him'.

BECKETT
Who's "they"?

VICENTE DELGADO
Don't know. But he was scared.

BECKETT
Why did he call you?

VICENTE DELGADO
Protection, chica. He said if I help him out, he'd come back, and he knew that was the price. So I told him where to meet. But by the time I got there, he was already dead.

BECKETT
You told him where to meet?

VICENTE DELGADO
That's right.

BECKETT
You didn't tell anyone else?

VICENTE DELGADO
No.

BECKETT
Did you see anything there?

[Delgado nods.]

VICENTE DELGADO
White guy, six foot. Caught a glimpse before the night swallowed him whole.

--
[17:14, INT. PRECINCT, BULLPEN - DAY]

BECKETT
They must have been tapping Orlando's phone. That's the only way they got there first. But how did they know to target Orlando for the job?

CASTLE
Because he was desperate for money.

BECKETT
Yeah, but how did they know that? How do they know his background?

ESPOSITO
Because they knew him from the military. He was hired by somebody he knew.

BECKETT
That's a place to start.

CASTLE
But whoever's gotten close to that secret is dead. I think it's clear we're in over our heads here.

ESPOSITO
Speak for yourself, bro.

[Ryan enters with a document.]

RYAN
Orlando's financials just came in. He was under water and overdrawn until last week when a wire transfer for ten grand hit his account.

BECKETT
Let me guess, untraceable?

[Ryan nods.]

CASTLE
So, it's a dead end.

RYAN
The deposits are, but the debit withdrawals are not.

CASTLE
Right when the money came in, Marisol started using it to pay bills.

BECKETT
Wait, if Marisol knew about the money.

ESPOSITO
Then she knew Orlando was up to something.

BECKETT
She lied to us.

RYAN
Not only that, but according to the bank, she cleaned out the entire account an hour ago.

BECKETT
She's on the run.

[Castle sits there and sighs as the other three take off.]

--
[18:04, INT. MARISOL'S APARTMENT, HALLWAY - DAY]
[Marisol steps out of her apartment with a suitcase just as Beckett is walking down the hallway. Marisol's jaw drops. Her son exits their apartment.]

BECKETT
Got a few questions for you before you leave town, and this time I want the truth.

--
ACT FOUR
[18:20, INT. PRECINCT, - DAY]

MARISOL CASTANEDA
I'm telling you the truth. I didn't know anything about the money. Not until today.

BECKETT
So why do we have debits against it the moment it appeared in your account?

MARISOL CASTANEDA
Orlando--

BECKETT
It was your card, Marisol! Who was Orlando working for? Do you know what's going to happen if you don't cooperate? You're gonna go to jail, and your kid's gonna go to foster care. Is that what you want?

CASTLE
Beckett.

BECKETT
Marco on the streets, enlisted by the Cazadores at age ten like his father, DEAD IN A GUTTER AT NINETEEN!

[Marisol slaps the table and yells in Spanish.]

CASTLE
Beckett. It's enough.

MARISOL CASTANEDA
Orlando said it was someone he knew from the service, someone dangerous, but it was just a one off. A lot of money for an easy job, and we needed the money.

BECKETT
What was the job?

MARISOL CASTANEDA
They needed files...from a dead cop's house.

[Beckett turns her head and sits down.]

CASTLE
What files?

MARISOL CASTANEDA
All of them. Any he could find.

BECKETT
This guy from the service, did you get a name?

MARISOL CASTANEDA
No.

BECKETT
Did you meet him?

MARISOL CASTANEDA
No.

CASTLE
Did he ever call the house?

MARISOL CASTANEDA
He left notes for Orlando in a mail box with a time and a place. They were coded so I—I wouldn’t know where. But I was in the car once. I saw where they met. At a church over on State Street.

--
[19:42, INT. STATE STREET CHURCH - DAY]

PRIEST
Wednesday, you say?

BECKETT
Yeah, around 3 PM.

CASTLE
He was meeting with someone.

PRIEST
I’m sorry. I wish I could help. But we’re open to the public, and…and we get a lot of unfamiliar faces every day. We usually just leave them to their prayers.

[Castle sees a lock on the donation box by the door.]

CASTLE
If your donation box is any indication, it looks like being open to the public comes with a price.

PRIEST
Yes, well...it’s not the best neighborhood. We catch gang kids and the homeless all the time, trying to take advantage of more than just our outreach programs.

BECKETT
How do you catch them?

--
[20:13, INT. PRECINCT, CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY]
[The team watches the security video of the donation box in the church.]

RYAN
Here it is, 3:00 PM Wednesday. There’s Orlando.

[Someone sits down next to Orlando on the pew, his face just out of view.]

ESPOSITO
That’s him.

BECKETT
Damn it.

[Orlando gets up from the pew and leaves. The mystery man stands up.]

BECKETT
Come on. Come on.

[The mystery man walks into view of the camera.]

BECKETT
Yes.

[Ryan pauses the video.]

BECKETT (whisper)
So that’s what you look like.

ESPOSITO
I’m gonna run this through Army C.I.D. If they met in the military, someone in Orlando’s old unit might be able to ID him.

BECKETT
No, no, we don’t know who’s involved, and we don’t know how high this goes. the minute we put this photo out there, these people are gonna know. He’s gonna disappear, and we will never see him again. We have to do this one on our own.

RYAN
Beckett, that’s impossible. All we have is a face – no name, no ID, no way to find this guy.

BECKETT
Then we will find a way to find him. I’m not gonna lose this lead.

[Beckett exits.]

RYAN
How are we supposed to investigate if we can’t investigate?

ESPOSITO
You heard the lady. We find a way.

--
[21:23, INT. BECKETT’S APARTMENT - NIGHT]
[Beckett stares at her homemade murder wall.]

MCCALLISTER (V.O.)
You woke the dragon, and this is so much bigger than you realize.

[Flashbacks to Beckett’s shooting.]

CASTLE (V.O.)
Kate!

WOMAN
…stat!

LANIE (V.O.)
Don’t die on me!

MAN (V.O.)
No pulse!

BECEKETT (V.O. whisper)
You can’t hide from me.

HAL LOCKWOOD (V.O.)
You got it ass backwards. You can’t hide from them.

[Flashback to Montgomery’s shooting.]

MONTGOMERY (V.O.)
I don’t know how, but somehow he figured out.

JOHN RAGLAN (V.O.)
I made a bad mistake.

[Flashback to Coonan’s shooting in the precinct.]

BECKETT (V.O.)
Who hired you to kill her?

DICK COONAN (V.O.)
Forget it. You’ll never touch ‘em.

--
[21:51, INT. CASTLE LOFT - NIGHT]
[Castle ponders in his office.]

--
[21:54, INT. PRECINCT, BULLPEN - NIGHT]
[Esposito goes over the security footage again. He pauses, rewinds, and zooms in on something in the mystery man’s hand. He recognizes it.]

--
[22:19, INT. BECKETT’S APARTMENT - NIGHT ]
[Castle knocks on Beckett’s door and she opens it.]

BECKETT
Hey.

CASTLE
Hey.

[Castle enters.]

BECKETT
I just got off the phone with Esposito. Our killer had a keychain, and he matched it to Eastway Car Rentals.

CASTLE
That could be one of a thousand cars.

BECKETT
I know, it’s a needle in a haystack, but at least it’s a haystack, and they keep most of their licenses on file.

CASTLE
Kate—

BECKETT
Yeah, he’s probably using a fake ID, but we should be able to narrow it down from there—

CASTLE (sharply)
Kate.

BECKETT
What’s wrong?

CASTLE (nervous whisper)
You, um….

[Castle clears his throat.]

CASTLE
You have to stop. This investigation, you—you have to stop.

BECKETT
Castle, we already talked about this. I’m fine. I’m in control.

CASTLE
No, you’re not. They are. And if you don’t stop, they will kill you, Kate.

BECKETT
What are you talking about?

CASTLE
Before Montgomery went into that hangar, he sent a package to someone, someone…he trusted. It contained information damaging to the person behind all this. Montgomery was trying to protect you. But the package didn’t arrive until after you’d been shot. Montgomery’s friend…struck a deal with them. If they left you alone, the package and the information inside would never see the light of day. But they made one condition—you had to back off. And that’s the reason you’re alive, Kate, because you stopped.

BECKETT
How do you know this?

CASTLE
In order for the deal to work, someone had to make sure you weren’t pursuing it.

BECKETT
Are you a part of this?

CASTLE
I was just trying to keep you safe.

[Beckett turns and walks away from him. She pauses and then turns to face him.]

BECKETT (emotional)
By lying to me about the most important thing in my life?

CASTLE
That lie was the only thing that was protecting you.

BECKETT
Castle, I didn’t need protection. I needed a lead, and you said on it for a year. Now, who is this person? How do I find him?

CASTLE
He’s a—a voice on the phone. He’s a shadow in a parking garage.

BECKETT
You met with him? How do you know that he’s not behind my mom’s murder? How do you know that he’s not involved? And how the hell could you do this?

CASTLE
Because I love you. But you already know that, don’t you? You’ve known for about a year.

BECKETT
Are you kidding me? You’re actually bringing this up right now, after you told me that you just betrayed me?

CASTLE
Kate, listen to me—

BECKETT
Listen to you? Why should I listen to you? How am I even supposed to trust anything that you say?

CASTLE
How are you s—? Because of everything we’ve been through together! Four years I’ve been right here. Four years just waiting for you to just open your eyes, and see that I’m right here…and that I’m more than a partner. Every morning, I—I bring you a cup of coffee just so I could see a smile on your face, because I think you are the most...remarkable…maddening…challenging…frustrating person I have ever met. And I love you, Kate, and if…that means anything to you, if you care about me at all, just don’t do this.

BECKETT
If I care about? Castle, you cut a deal for my life like I was some kind of a child. My life. Mine. You don’t get to decide.

CASTLE
You keep going with this, they’re gonna decide. They’re gonna come for you, Kate.

BECKETT
Let them come. They sent Coonan, and he is dead. They sent Lockwood, and he is dead. And I am still here, Castle! And I am ready!

CASTLE
Ready for what? To die for your cause? This isn’t a murder investigation anymore, Kate. They’ve turned it into a war.

BECKETT
If they want a war, then I will bring them a war, straight to their doorsteps.

CASTLE
Well, I guess there’s just nothing I can say, is there? Okay, um… Yeah, you’re right, Kate, it’s your life. You can throw it away if you want, but I’m not gonna stick around and watch you. So this is, uh…over. I’m done.

[Castle leaves and Beckett stares forward, processing their argument.]

ACT FIVE
[27:13, INT. CASTLE LOFT - NIGHT]
[Castle walks dejectedly into his living room. He sees Alexis’s graduation cap and gown and fingers the tassel on the hat.]

ALEXIS
Everything okay?

CASTLE
Yeah. Fine. How’s your speech coming?

ALEXIS
I have watched or read every graduation address ever written and compiled all the best advice into one speech, and then I read it out loud. And guess what I sounded like? A pompous ass. I’m eighteen years old. What the hell do I know?

[Castle hugs Alexis.]

CASTLE
Hey, look, everything you know, everything you will know is…is what’s true for you.

ALEXIS
All I know is, everything’s changing. Everything’s going to be different, and I’m so scared.

CASTLE
Of what?

ALEXIS
Moving on.

CASTLE
Write about that.

[Castle kisses her forehead.]

CASTLE
That feels true.

--
[28:22, EXT. CEMETERY - MORNING]
[Beckett plays with her mother’s ring on her necklace. The grave reads “Johanna Beckett. Vincit omnia veritas. February 4th 1951. January 9th 1999” Beckett wipes away a tear.]

--
[29:02, INT. PRECINCT, CONFERENCE ROOM - MORNING]
[Beckett takes determined strides through the precinct.]

RYAN
Where’s Castle.

BECKETT
He’s off the team.

[Ryan and Esposito exchange a look.]

BECKETT
So what do we got?

ESPOSITO
Eastway rented 700 cars last Wednesday.

RYAN
We believe our suspect is going under the name Cole Maddox. He rented out of JFK

ESPOSITO
It’s a Kansas driver’s license. Now, we did some digging. It’s a cover ID.

BECKETT
Did he return the car?

ESPOSITO
No, but…Eastway maintains GPS tracking on all of its equipment, so we tracked it to the lower east side to a one-block radius somewhere along here.

BECKETT
All right, you stay on grid. Let us know if he moves. Esposito, you’re coming with me.

RYAN
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. What are you doing? You want to do this, you do it right. You put a team on that car and you bring backup with you.

BECKETT (whisper)
Ryan, this whole thing started because of a group of corrupt cops. How do you know there aren’t more out there? We’re about an inch away from catching this guy, and I’m not gonna blow it by advertising our next move.

RYAN
With all due respect, this guy put a bullet in your heart and then disappeared into the ether. You cannot go in there unprepared.

BECKETT
Unprepared? I’ve been preparing for this for the past thirteen years.

[Beckett leaves and Esposito follows.]

RYAN (whisper)
Hey, Javier…

[Esposito stops and turns around.]

RYAN (whisper)
Man, don’t let her do this. It’s too big of a risk.

ESPOSITO
It’s all good, bro. We got this.

[Esposito leaves.]

--
[30:23, INT. CASTLE LOFT - DAY]

CASTLE
Come on. We don’t want to miss her speech. (to himself) Or the entire graduation.

MARTHA
I’m almost ready.

[Castle’s cell rings. He checks the caller ID “12th Precinct Calling.” Castle rejects the call.]

--
[30:40, INT. PRECINCT, BULLPEN - DAY]
[Ryan hangs up, frustrated.]

--
[30:46, EXT. STREET - DAY]
[Esposito jogs across the street to Beckett.]

ESPOSITO
Hey, we got him. The doorman at the Residency Hotel across the way ID’ed the car. And the front desk clerk confirms that Mr. Maddox is here on a one-month lease. They’ve agreed to let us in his room.

--
[31:00, INT. RESIDENCY HOTEL - DAY]
[The hotel staff opens the door and pokes his head in the room. Esposito pulls him back.]

ESPOSITO
Get out of the way.

[Beckett and Esposito enter, guns at the ready.]

ESPOSITO
Clear.

BECKETT
Clear.

[Esposito sees papers on a table.]

ESPOSITO
Montgomery’s files.

[Esposito looks at the open laptop.]

ESPOSITO
His contact list? What the hell were they looking for?

[Beckett flips through some stacks.]

BECKETT
Not what. Who. They grabbed Montgomery’s wedding album.

ESPOSITO
Why?

BECKETT
They’re looking for someone that he knew.

[Beckett flips through the album. A bunch of X’s are drawn over people’s faces and one photo is missing.]

ESPOSITO
Maybe they found him.

BECKETT
We gotta get out of here. I’m gonna call for backup. We’ll set up in the l—

[Beckett grunts as Maddox grabs her and throws her to the floor. Maddox beats up Esposito, too, and takes off. Beckett pursues him, shoots a couple rounds, and follows him to the roof. Maddox docks around a corner and Beckett proceeds carefully. Maddox grabs her from behind and they fight. He knocks her onto her back and she grunts in pain. He grabs her throat and pulls her to a standing position, choking her. She hits him and drops to the ground. He prepares for the next bout, but she struggles to breathe.]

BECKETT
Just tell me who’s behind this.

MADDOX
You’re wasting your time, Detective. You have no idea what you’re up against.

BECKETT
Neither do you.

[Beckett charges Maddox, but he flips her and she rolls off the edge of the building. Beckett grabs the ledge just before she falls, and hangs on for dear life.]

BECKETT
Help! Help!

[Maddox looks down at her.]

MADDOX
Actually…we know exactly who we’re up against.

[Beckett struggles to hold onto the ledge and Maddox leaves.]

--
ACT SIX
[34:00, INT. RESIDENCY HOTEL, ROOF - DAY]
[Beckett holds on for dear life.]

BECKETT
Help!

[Beckett looks down.]

BECKETT
Oh! Oh, god.

[She tries for a better grip on the ledge.]

BECKETT
No! Oh, not like this. Come on.

[Beckett readjusts her grip and tries to use her feet on the wall, but it’s no use.]

BECKETT
Come on. No!

[Beckett grunts. She looks down and the ground warps below her.]

BECKETT (whisper)
Castle.

[One hand slips off and the ground spins below her. She grunts, holding on by the fingertips on her left hand.]

CASTLE (O.S.)
Beckett!

BECKETT
Castle!

CASTLE (O.S.)
Beckett!

BECKETT
Castle, I'm here!

[Beckett’s fingers begin to slip.]

BECKETT
No! Oh, god. Castle!

CASTLE
Beckett, hang on!

[Beckett’s fingers slip further.]

BECKETT
CASTLE!

[Beckett's hand slips.]

RYAN
BECKETT!

[Ryan grabs Beckett’s hand. He and three SWAT members pull her up. They pant and look at each other.]

BECKETT
Castle?

[Ryan shakes his head. Beckett is disappointed. Then she sees Captain Gates over Ryan’s shoulder, looking very stern.]

--
[35:29, INT. PRECINCT, GATES’S OFFICE – DAY]

GATES
Withholding evidence, lying to a superior officer! What you did dishonors this city and dishonors the badge. Not only are you off this investigation, I’m putting you both on administrative leave effective immediately.

BECKETT
Sir—

GATES
Don’t you “sir” me. You don’t deserve to wear the uniform. Now hand over your badges and guns.

[Esposito puts his badge and gun on the desk. Beckett just stands there.]

GATES
Detective Beckett?

[Beckett places her gun on the table. Gates waits. Beckett pulls out her badge, looks at it, then looks up at Gates and tosses it on the desk.]

BECKETT
Keep it. I resign.

[Gates and Esposito are surprise as they watch her leave.]

--
[36:31, INT. HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION/PRECINCT, BULLPEN - DAY]

ALEXIS
There is a universal truth we all have to face, whether we want to or not. Everything eventually ends. As much as I’ve looked forward to this day, I’ve always disliked endings…

[Beckett collects the stuff on her desk.]

ALEXIS
…the last day of summer…the final chapter of a great book…

[Beckett takes a last look at her desk and leaves the precinct.]

ALEXIS
Parting ways with a close friend. But endings are inevitable.

[Esposito walks angrily past Ryan and grabs his coat.]

RYAN
Javi...I had to.

[Esposito leaves without looking at Ryan.]

ALEXIS
Leaves fall. You close the book.

[Beckett enters the elevator. Ryan throws a book across the bullpen.]

ALEXIS
You say goodbye.

[The elevator doors close and Beckett begins to get emotional.]

ALEXIS
Today is one of those days for us. today we say goodbye to everything that was familiar…

[Beckett walks to the swings that she and Castle sat on in the first ep of the season, in the pouring rain.]

ALEXIS
Everything that was comfortable. We’re moving on. but just because we’re leaving, and that hurts..there are some people who are so much a part of us they’ll be with us no matter what. They are our solid ground, our north start, and the small clear voices in our hearts that will be with us…always.

[Castle and Alexis share a smile as the audience applauds, and Alexis waves to her dad.]

--
[38:36, EXT. PARK - NIGHT]
[Beckett sits on the swing in the pouring rain.]

--
[38:46, INT. CASTLE LOFT - NIGHT]
[Castle walks through his living room with Alexis’s graduation tassel.]

CASTLE (on cell)
No, Alexis, I’ll be fine. I got a thousand cable channels; I got my X-Box. You have fun. I will not worry about you until lunchtime tomorrow. I love you, too.

[Castle hangs up and places the tassel on a lamp. Castle’s cell rings. The caller ID is Kate Beckett. He rejects the call and turns on his touch screen with Beckett’s conspiracy file. He moves the file to the trash. He sighs heavily. There’s a knock at the door. Thunder rolls as Castle opens the door to find Beckett standing there, soaking wet. His expression turns unwelcoming.]

CASTLE
Beckett, what do you want?

BECKETT
You.

[Beckett pushes past the door, grabs Castle’s face, and kisses him. He’s in shock. She leans her forehead against his.]

BECKETT (whisper)
I’m so sorry, Castle. (voice breaking) I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.

[Beckett goes for another kiss, but Castle pulls her away and looks at her teary face.]

CASTLE
What happened?

BECKETT
He got away, and I didn’t care. I almost died, and all I could think about was you. I just want you.

[Beckett goes for another kiss, but Castle holds back. Beckett pulls back, unsure, and Castle looks at her. Thunder cracks and Castle pushes Beckett against the open door, kissing her soundly. He kisses her all over, then unbuttons her shirt to see the bullet hole scar in her chest. Beckett places his hand over it and they kiss. Beckett smiles and takes Castle’s hand, leading him away.]

--
[41:36, INT. MYSTERY SMITH’S APARTMENT - NIGHT]
[Maddox looks at a photo with “Smith” taped over it. Footsteps approach and the mystery caller enters his apartment and checks the mail. In the next room, Maddox sits at the desk.]

MADDOX
Mr…Smith?

[Smith drops the mail.]

MYSTERY SMITH
Who are you?

[Maddox shows him the photo]

MADDOX
You’ve been a very hard man to find.

MYSTERY SMITH
What do you want?

MADDOX
You have some sensitive information about my employer, information that you’ve been using to protect Detective Beckett.

MYSTERY SMITH
Are you forgetting…we have a deal?

MADDOX
No. What you had was blackmail. Now, you’re gonna tell me where all that information is, and after you do, I’m gonna put Kate Beckett in the ground once and for all.
